Columbia Sportswear: Doomsday Looks Good on You

Columbia Sportswear has a message for anyone worried about the end of the world: you don’t need a billionaire’s bank account to prepare for the worst. You just need some outdoor skills, a little ingenuity, and perhaps a place to hide when things get really ugly. Enter the Don’t Panic Room, a new campaign and contest created with adam&eve\TBWA that takes a playful swing at the wealthy tech crowd’s obsession with doomsday bunkers.

Forget the Billionaire Bunker

The campaign offers one lucky survivalist a fully stocked, off-grid bunker built from a 40-foot shipping container. And no, this isn’t one of those underground luxury compounds with a swimming pool and a private cinema. The Don’t Panic Room comes with a bunk bed, kitchen, bathroom, survival supplies, Columbia gear, and even a robotic dog named Rocky. Because if civilization collapses, somebody still has to be your best friend.

The launch film features Columbia CEO Tim Boyle inviting people to prove they have what it takes to survive. Directed by Benji Weinstein and produced by SMUGGLER, the spot sets the tone for a campaign that pokes fun at tech billionaires preparing to escape a world increasingly shaped by technology. Columbia’s alternative? Give the rest of us a fighting chance, preferably with a decent jacket.

Canned Heat, Anyone?

The bunker’s contents are where the idea gets particularly fun. Columbia puffer jackets are sealed inside cans, ready to be opened when the temperature takes a turn for the worse. It’s a literal take on canned heat, powered by the brand’s Omni-Heat Infinity thermal-reflective technology. The bunker also includes waterproof Tellurix Titanium OutDry Mid footwear and other gear designed for unpredictable conditions.

The contest invites outdoor enthusiasts to submit videos demonstrating their survival skills through Instagram or Columbia’s campaign website. Entries close November 24, 2026, and the bunker will be delivered directly to the winner.

The campaign launches with a social film, a print ad in The New York Times, and billboards across Silicon Valley, putting its billionaire-bunker joke right on the doorstep of its intended audience. Special-edition jacket cans will also go to influencers, creators, and key media.

Under Columbia’s “Engineered for Whatever” platform, the campaign turns a practical promise into an entertaining stunt. It’s a little absurd, a little cheeky, and a smart way to make technical outdoor gear part of a bigger story. After all, when the world starts falling apart, having the right equipment is useful. Having a robotic dog is a bonus.

And if the apocalypse does arrive, at least one person will be dressed for the occasion. The rest of us can only hope Rocky accepts visitors.
