Monday morning is already a contact sport in the Thing household. Mum and Dad are juggling breakfast and packed lunches, the twins are running riot, and teenager Ash is about to discover that her shower has turned into an Arctic expedition. Her scream is so powerful it sends a flock of birds fleeing. Dad, on the other hand, barely bats an eyelid. One look at the broken boiler, a quick booking through the British Gas app, and help is on the way.
Created by VCCP and directed by Thirtytwo, the new Sounds like a job for British Gas campaign brings back The Things, the fluffy blue family from the brand’s Taking care of things platform.
More Than Keeping the Lights On
This time, the message is simple: when your heating, plumbing or electrics go haywire, British Gas wants to be the name that springs to mind. The campaign arrives just in time for boiler season, when a broken heating system can turn a perfectly ordinary day into a domestic disaster.
There’s a practical hook, too. British Gas is introducing a “No Fix, No Fee” boiler offer, alongside a same-day call-out promise for bookings made before 11am. If the engineer can’t fix the problem, customers won’t pay for the repair. With more than 500,000 boiler repairs needed across the UK every year, the timing makes sense.
Developed with media agency OMD, the campaign runs across TV, out-of-home, radio, online video and social. British Gas is also getting smarter about search, offering practical advice from its engineers when people look for help with problems like cold radiators and flickering lights, with an option to book professional assistance when needed.
It’s a shift from simply supplying energy to helping keep the whole home running. And when your morning shower feels like a trip to the Arctic, a friendly engineer at the door is a welcome sight.
This campaign has all the right connections. — Julian Vega
