Written and directed by Neeraja Raj, the stop-motion musical follows Pucha, a feline explorer determined to uncover the answer to life’s biggest question. Her carefully planned mission takes an unexpected turn when her AI-powered spaceship accidentally leaves her stranded on Planet B-206. There she meets Blip, an endlessly optimistic dog whose carefree outlook couldn’t be more different from her own. Together, they set off on a colorful journey that gradually shifts from a search for answers to an appreciation of the moments they share along the way.
A Handmade Celebration of Friendship
Raj has described Meow or Never as a deeply personal film, born from her own existential questions and her lifelong love of musicals. At its heart, however, she wanted to celebrate something often overlooked on screen: the importance of friendship. Rather than centering a romantic relationship, the film explores how meaningful platonic connections can shape our lives and help us discover who we are.
That warmth extends into every frame. Built from handcrafted paper sets, fabric puppets, and playful miniature environments, the film embraces the tactile charm that makes stop-motion animation so distinctive. Raj also combines traditional stop-motion with hand-drawn 2D sequences, creating a visual style that feels inventive without losing its handmade character.
Completed over fourteen months at the National Film and Television School, the project reflects both technical ambition and genuine affection for the medium. Every detail contributes to a world that feels whimsical, inviting, and full of personality.
Finding Answers in Unexpected Places
Although Meow or Never asks philosophical questions, it never becomes heavy-handed. Instead, Raj suggests that meaning isn’t something waiting to be discovered at the end of a grand adventure. It grows through kindness, curiosity, and the relationships we build with others.
The film’s joyful spirit resonated with audiences, earning recognition that included a Student BAFTA shortlist, the Women in Animation Best Film Award, and the Digicon6 Asia Silver Award for Best Technique. It has also inspired the development of a larger series with Nexus Studios.
