The Brooklyn-based dream pop project of Brazilian artist Rafael Melo returns with “Crazy or Stupid.” It’s a breezy indie gem that turns the small frustrations of everyday life into something unexpectedly catchy. Released on July 8 as the second single from the upcoming EP I Dreamt I Was Awake, the track proves that sharp observations, humor, and irresistible melodies can comfortably exist in the same space.
“Everybody is crazy, or stupid, or crazy and stupid.” It’s a provocative hook, but one that Melo delivers with a grin rather than a raised finger. Instead of preaching, “Crazy or Stupid” strings together moments almost everyone recognizes: noisy neighbors, forgotten bills, bizarre AI-generated posts, and the strange realization that modern life often feels just a little ridiculous. The influence of artists like Mac DeMarco, Men I Trust, and The Marías is easy to hear, yet Late Again filters those inspirations through a perspective that feels entirely their own.
What impressed me most about “Crazy or Stupid” is that Rafael Melo never places themselves above the chaos. The song laughs at modern life without pretending the narrator has all the answers. They’re just another person trying to make sense of noisy streets, unpaid bills, and a world that often feels impossible to decode. That shared sense of bewilderment is exactly what gives the humor its charm.
If this single is any indication, I Dreamt I Was Awake won’t simply collect catchy dream pop songs. It promises to explore the strange overlap between irony, empathy, and everyday life, finding melody where many artists would settle for cynicism.
