Last week marked 47 years since Canadian cartoonist Lynn Johnston introduced readers to the Patterson family. For Better or For Worse debuted on September 9, 1979, and went on to become one of the most beloved comic strips in Canada and beyond, chronicling childhood, marriage, parenthood, aging, and all the wonderfully mundane complications of family life.
For Better or For Worse: The Comic Art of Lynn Johnston offers a beautifully assembled look at the artist behind that extraordinary run. Created to accompany a retrospective organized by the Art Gallery of Sudbury, the book brings together comic strips, Sunday pages, photographs, early artwork, influences, and autobiographical material. It feels less like a conventional retrospective and more like opening a very large, very personal scrapbook.
