Walk through a busy city and there is a good chance you will see almost everything except what is directly in front of you. People hurry past walls, staircases, reflections, shadows, and patches of afternoon light without giving them much thought. Leon Yu does the opposite. His photographs begin with those easily overlooked fragments, finding beauty in the way ordinary urban details briefly arrange themselves.
Yu, who is based in Beijing, began exploring street photography in August 2023 after discovering the work of accomplished street photographers on Instagram. What started as curiosity quickly became a more serious study of the medium. He realized photography could do more than document the world around him. It could change the way he looked at it.
