Charissa Finds Her Fire on Locked and Loaded

There’s a moment in every artist’s journey where the hesitation burns off and something steadier takes its place. On Locked and Loaded, Burlington’s own Charissa sounds like she’s stepped fully into that moment — not just as a singer with a striking voice, but as a songwriter who knows exactly what she’s aiming for.

If you’ve followed her path from Love and Be Loved — her 2022 debut EP produced by Blue Rodeo’s Colin Cripps — you’ve already heard the depth in her tone. Warm, rich, and unmistakably hers, Charissa has always carried what industry veteran Andy Kim once described as an “honest voice.” But this new chapter feels different. Bigger. Bolder.

The title track, “Locked and Loaded,” was born from frustration — a simple Am to F progression on her guitar and a restless energy about where she stood in her career. Co-written with Daniel Ross Wilson and Carrie DeMaeyer and produced by Tim Allard, the song builds from that spark into a full-fledged anthem. Piano lines swirl over gritty Americana textures, the drums hit with purpose, and Charissa’s vocals climb with conviction. It’s a dreamer’s song, yes — but not a naïve one. It’s about dedication. Grit. Refusing to stall out.

That shift toward more upbeat, anthem-style material marks a clear evolution. Where she once gravitated toward ballads, she now leans into bigger moments — vocally and emotionally. You can still hear the rootsy blend of Americana, soul, folk, and country that defines her sound, but there’s a new urgency underneath it. A refusal to shrink.

Her songwriting process still begins with melody — often captured quickly in a phone recording before it slips away — and that melodic instinct carries these tracks. But it’s the vulnerability that keeps them grounded. Whether she’s channeling heartbreak, longing, or career doubt, Charissa writes from lived experience. She doesn’t posture. She shares.

What makes Locked and Loaded land the way it does is that it never strains for validation. The songs feel lived-in and hard-won, built the same way Charissa carries herself onstage — steady, present, and fully committed whether the room holds a handful of listeners or a sea of them. It’s confidence that doesn’t shout for approval. It simply shows up and delivers.

And she’s not slowing down. Next Friday, February 27th, she teams up with YASSiN & Sean Terrio for a new single, “Right Here Right Now.” If Locked and Loaded is about stepping into her power, this collaboration feels like the next natural move — widening the circle, testing new chemistry, and keeping that forward momentum alive. Something tells me she’s exactly where she’s supposed to be.

Trust me — this is just the beginning. You can follow the ride here.
