Newsies Like You’ve Never Seen Before: Danielle Viola’s Bold New Take on a Classic Story

Opening on Friday, August 22nd, Curtain Call Performing Arts Company’s Passion Project takes the stage at Gasworks in Hamilton, Ontario, bringing to life the historic story of Newsies.

Taking a beloved musical like Newsies and reimagining it for a smaller cast and intimate theatre setting is not a small task, but Director, Danielle Viola, has embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. Traditionally performed with a cast of 30 or more, this version of Newsies brings the story to life with just 18 performers.

“Making 18 people work for a show like Newsies is no easy feat, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Danielle says. “It allowed me to create a space that both challenged the performers and gave every single person a chance to shine. It took a lot of careful tracking and planning…I knew going into auditions exactly how many people I wanted in the show and how we could balance all the roles. We needed performers that are so engaged that it feels like 40 are still on stage, but the close-knit brotherhood is almost seen more with a smaller group of newsies.”

Danielle emphasizes that this intentional approach made the process incredibly rewarding: “Everyone in our cast is so incredibly essential to telling this beautiful story.” By giving each performer multiple opportunities to contribute, the production maintains the high energy and dynamic ensemble feel of a much larger cast.

The intimacy of the venue adds another layer of innovation. Transforming Gasworks, traditionally an event space, into a theatre space allowed the team to invite the audience right into the world of the story. Danielle adds, “Doing intimate theatre is one of my favourite things to work on. Gasworks gives us this incredible opportunity to transform a space and invite the audience right into the world of the story. It’s not about putting distance between the performers and the audience, it’s about breaking that down. The closeness makes the energy electric, and every moment feels shared, like we’re all experiencing Newsies together.”

The intimacy of the venue also heightens the stakes in the storyline itself. Danielle adds, In a show like Newsies, as the newsboys build the union, the audience gets to decide what side they want to be on in a very intimate way.”

Beyond casting and space, the production leans into the themes of community, solidarity, and courage that are at the heart of Newsies. “At its heart, Newsies is about young people rising up, finding their voices, creating a found family and standing together against injustice. That message feels especially important right now. The idea that community, solidarity, and courage can spark real change isn’t just a story from 1899—it’s something we’re still living and may be even bigger today.”

The design choices reflect this vision as well. “We wanted to take a few steps away from the neat, clean Disney version we may be used to seeing and show the part of New York that these kids would have actually come from. Show the big contrast between Pulitzer and Katherine’s life and the newsboys, so when they all connect and intertwine, the impact is larger. As a history nerd, I did a ton of research on the actual historical Newsboys strike to dig into that reality and show it in performance. They were kids, boys and girls, who were trying to survive and found out that if we all speak, we have a voice that can be heard.”

This fresh approach to casting, space, and storytelling demonstrates how musical theatre can be reimagined in ways that feel both intimate and monumental, bringing audiences closer to the heart of the story than ever before. It’s incredibly exciting to see directors like Danielle Viola taking creative liberties to bring fresh perspectives to local theatre, challenging traditional approaches and showing just how dynamic and innovative productions can be, even on a smaller, community-focused stage.
