Marseille: Indie Rock’s Next Big Thing?

Derbyshire’s Marseille are quickly turning heads, and their latest single, History, is poised to make waves in the indie rock scene. Despite the band being just a group of 19-year-olds, their sound is a bold fusion of indie rock, shoegaze, and Brit-pop nostalgia, and History is the perfect showcase of their promise.

The track is an anthem for anyone who’s ever dared to dream big, and it’s clear from the first notes that Marseille aren’t just another group of up-and-comers – they’re a band with a message. Produced by Michael Smith, known for his work with Wolf Alice, History pulses with energy, marrying driving guitars with powerful, soaring vocals. As lead singer Will Brown puts it, the song is a “love letter to the dreams we all had as children,” and it’s impossible not to feel that sense of youthful ambition in every chord.

Marseille’s music is something unique in today’s alt-rock scene. With influences ranging from the raw energy of ’90s indie to the jangly tones of ‘60s Merseybeat, their sound is familiar yet refreshing. History offers a taste of this, evoking the classic sounds of bands like Oasis and The Stone Roses, while still carving out their own distinct space. This ability to blend nostalgic influence with fresh energy has already earned Marseille attention from BBC 6 Music and The Line of Best Fit, signaling they’re ready to step into the spotlight.

But what sets Marseille apart isn’t just their ability to craft anthems. It’s their palpable energy and confidence. The band is often described as having a “zero-fucks given swagger,” and that brashness is perfectly captured in History. Drummer Tom Spray drives the track with his forceful rhythms, while bassist Will Sabey locks in with a thumping, irresistible groove. Guitarists Joe Labram and Lennon Hall bring an undeniable edge, shifting seamlessly from crunchy riffs to delicate, melodic lines.

With their fearless blend of styles and unwavering self-belief, Marseille are clearly a band to watch. Their unique sound has already helped them sell out UK venues and play major festivals, and History is just the beginning. As Brown says, “We are five young lads that want our legacy to be remembered,” and with tracks like this, it seems they’re on the right path.

If you haven’t heard Marseille yet, it’s time to jump on board. Their debut single for Echo Bass Records is out now on all major streaming platforms, and a limited edition 7” vinyl will be released March 14th. Don’t miss out – the future of indie rock could very well be written in History.
